Egg nog has long been one of my favourite tipples at Christmas. It’s basically like drinking cold custard. The classic mixture of cream, rum, sugar and egg yolk isn’t necessarily a recipe for a good night’s rest, but one of the most nostalgic features of a good nog is the generous dusting of nutmeg on top, which is perfect for easing you into a restful winter slumber. I’ve paired it with other sleep-easy
ingredients such as banana and hemp, oats or almonds that emulate the creamy comfort of custard while offering a heady dose of nod- inducing tryptophan.
Serves 2
500ml hemp milk, oat milk, or almond milk
1 tsp ground hemp seeds, flaxseed, or chia seeds (soaked if you like)
1 banana, peeled (and frozen, if you want the drink to be chilled)
1 tsp ashwagandha powder
1 tsp ground cinnamon
¼ tsp freshly ground nutmeg, plus more to serve drop of honey, or maple syrup (optional)
Blend the milk, seeds, banana (try frozen, or add a few ice cubes for a thicker, creamier consistency), ashwagandha, cinnamon and nutmeg.
Taste and whizz in the honey or maple syrup, if using,
to taste.
Pour into glasses and finish with a decorative cap of nutmeg.
